Use These First-Grade Video Lessons to Teach Positive Character Traits

Our first-grade character education series includes 36 video lessons that teach students about developing positive character traits. Each of our videos is 7 to 10 minutes in length and follows a predictable and engaging format for young learners.

Introduction to Character Trait with a picture of a teacher and a squirrel puppet and a definition of kindness with a red heart.

Introduction to the Trait

At the beginning of every episode, students are greeted by Miss Sara and Gray Squirrel as they are introduced to the character trait that the episode focuses on. Miss Sara defines the character trait in simple, kid-friendly terms. The meaning of the character trait is expanded on throughout the episode with further explanations and examples.

Introduction to Prominent Figure

In our first-grade series, we have intentionally paired each character trait with a prominent figure who exemplifies it. We interweave teaching about character traits and historical or current figures throughout the episodes. This provides an engaging storyline for students to follow while they simultaneously learn about a prominent role model and deepen their understanding of the character trait.

Puppets

All of our episodes, the kindergarten and classroom expectations episodes included, are filmed with a familiar cast of puppets! As your students watch the episodes they will get to know the personalities of Bobby, Eddie, Jasmine, Jayla, Jordan, Jose, Katie, Kenny, Sierra, and Susie. Each episode features two members of our puppet cast. We’ve created kid-relatable dilemmas that the puppets encounter and talk about in each episode. Miss Sara talks the puppets through their dilemmas and by the end of each episode guides them to a resolution that is, of course, connected to the character trait she taught about!

Conclusion

Just as we begin each episode by The Character Tree with Gray Squirrel, Miss Sara also closes out each episode with the help of Gray Squirrel. She concludes each episode by encouraging students to fill their day with learning and wonder.
