November brings the opportunity to incorporate lessons and activities for your students on gratitude, kindness, and community in your classroom. Here are some ideas for how you can use The Character Tree to enhance your SEL lessons during the month.
1. Veterans Day
Veterans Day allows students to learn about service, sacrifice, and history. Our episode on Veterans and gratitude teaches students and provides follow-up activities on:
- The history of Veterans Day and the branches of the military.
- Writing thank-you letters to honor veterans.
2. Native American Heritage Month
November is Native American Heritage Month. Our episode on Jim Thorpe and the character trait of perseverance would be a great one to share with your students as it can lead to lessons on:
- The history, culture, and contributions of Native Americans.
- Reading stories and studying the lives of influential Native American figures.
3. Thanksgiving and Gratitude
Thanksgiving provides an opportunity to teach about gratitude and community. Our episode on Oprah and how she exemplifies gratitude in her life will make the perfect addition to your November plans. Follow-up activities may include:
- Gratitude journals, where students reflect on things they’re thankful for.
- Classroom community-building activities, encouraging students to express appreciation for each other.
These monthly focuses allow teachers to incorporate cultural, historical, and social-emotional themes that make learning relevant and engaging for students, while also building community and gratitude in the classroom.
